Dr Johan van der Walt

Dr. Johan van der Walt grew up in Welkom in the Free State. He completed his medical studies in 2006 at the University of the Free State and did his internship at the Academic Hospital Complex in Bloemfontein.

In 2009, he completed his Community Service at the Institute for Maritime Medicine in Simon’s Town. There he consulted with serving and retired military members and their families. He found this environment and its people interesting and became head of the unit’s department of Clinical Medicine from 2011 to 2022. During this time, he was fortunate to gain skills and experience not only in Primary Care and Geriatric Medicine, but also in Diving and Underwater medicine.

Johan has a special interest in Neurology and Geriatric Medicine. He enjoys the many domains and variables that these disciplines bring. He values good patient communication and considers empathetic medicine to be integral to the treatment process.

When Johan is not a doctor, he is the organist at Gereformeerde Kerk Kaapstad, a post he has filled for the last 14 years. He plays the piano and trumpet and enjoys attending live music events. He lives with his partner in Fish Hoek with their cats, Jasmine and Miles.
